A sex cell is a cell produced in the body?s reproductive system that, when combined with a sex cell belonging to a member of the opposite sex, creates life.

In human beings, the sex cells are produced in the gonads by a two-phase cell division process called meiosis. The female human sex cells are called ova or eggs. Male sex cells are called spermatozoa or sperm cells.

A sex cell is also called a gamete.
